Using what I have to create. I got started making art as a personal experiment to see what I could create with the scrap laying around my shop. Being raised by frugal parents instilled in me the value of not throwing things away. But instead of being a hoarder, I desired to create with what I had.
Using the modern manufacturing technologies of a 5ft x 10ft CNC Router and a 2ft x 3ft CO2 laser I am taking off-fall, scrap, and otherwise seemingly useless pieces of material to add beauty to the world. My first creation was a 3 dimensional Settlers of Catan set machined out of 2in HDU sign foam, painted, and finished with Woodland Scenic products.
After that, a customer brought a small piece of Baltic Birch that had been machined into 3D. I saw the beauty of the finished product and it inspired me to use the pieces of Baltic Birch I had laying around my shop to create both large and small pieces of my own.
My latest experiments are using frosted acrylic as a substrate to allow the surface to be illuminated from both the front and back.
